- Academic Clinical Assistant Professor in Intraoperative Neurophysiology
Description
The Intraoperative Neurophysiology (IONP) program in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invites applications for a clinical assistant professor (non-tenure track) position. This is a 9-month academic appointment position that is 75% teaching and 25% administration/service/scholarship with a typical teaching load of three (3) courses per fall and winter semester. We are seeking a colleague with exceptional experience in the field of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong dedication to the field, evidenced by educating others, service to the field (national and/or international society level involvement), and a minimum of 7 years of active intraoperative clinical work in the operating room (not professional oversight). Experience in mentoring learners and nurturing their clinical skills through effective and innovative pedagogy is also desirable.
Duties and responsibilities for this position will include teaching assignments in the School of Kinesiology’s Intraoperative Neurophysiology and potentially the Movement Science program. The initial course assignments will include teaching several core pre-clinical intraoperative neurophysiology courses and/or labs, as well as overseeing the clinical experiences of the program’s students. Other teaching opportunities may consist of core Movement Science courses required for undergraduate students. These include musculoskeletal anatomy and human physiology, along with laboratory components. Administrative duties include, but are not limited to, serving on the IONP graduate admissions committee, supervision of lab instructors who teach the hands-on laboratory sections of the Surgical Neurophysiology Lab, and mentoring and advising IONP students. Engagement in professional scholarship and participation in departmental, university, and/or community service is expected. Beyond this, ongoing fractional clinical work (active neuromonitoring) is expected.

Requirements
- Candidates must hold an MS or PhD in a discipline relevant to Intraoperative Neurophysiology (i.e., neuroscience, biomedical engineering, neurophysiology).
- Candidates must hold an active certification to perform intraoperative neuromonitoring by ABRET (CNIM) or other equivalent IONM-specific certification.
- Established as a successful educator in the field of IONM, demonstrated by education of peers through delivery of local and regional talks, experience in classroom settings, and successful mentorship of IONM clinicians.
- Service to the field of IONM, evidenced by membership in professional society committees, involvement in delivery or moderation of peer education programs (local, regional, or national programs, symposia, or webinars), curricular development, or development of best practices or innovative methods in practice-based disciplinary areas.
- Candidates must have experience monitoring a variety of procedures, including complex cases such as skull base tumor resections, spinal cord and brainstem mapping, and supratentorial brain tumor resection with mapping.
- Skills and abilities such as providing laboratory oversight, serving as a course coordinator, maintaining inventory of lab supplies, mentoring of IONM clinicians, contributing to new academic curricula, developing inclusive teaching initiatives, and collaborative research and scholarship are strongly preferred.
