Overview
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian to join the Institute for Animal Studies (IAS), this institution's AAALAC accredited laboratory animal care and use program. The IAS manages the procurement, quarantine, housing and husbandry, health quality assurance, and provision of veterinary care for rodents (mostly mice), rabbits, birds, and non-human primates on the Einstein campus. The program includes four central animal facilities, housing primarily rodents (~ 18,000 cages of mice).
Responsibilities
The Clinical Veterinarian will join two other Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (the IAS Director and the IAS Assistant Director for Veterinary Clinical Care) and a team of 4 Veterinary Technicians to monitor health and ensure the provision of adequate veterinary care to animals used in research. This position will report to the Director of the Institute for Animal Studies and help the Assistant Director for Veterinary Clinical Care. Specific responsibilities of the Clinical Veterinarian include:
- Responding to sick animal reports submitted by husbandry staff and investigators [Note: the Veterinary Technicians typically handle the monitoring, assessment, and treatments of rodent colonies under oversight of the clinical veterinarian(s)].Evaluating unexpected morbidity and mortality clusters reported by husbandry, veterinary, or investigator staff. Advising researchers when iatrogenic or technical factors are identified.Conducting periodic routine health rounds of animal rooms (including rodents) Conducting routine periodic (quarterly) health assessments of rodent colonies to monitor specific pathogen-free (SPF) status.Carrying testing and eradication procedures during "breaks" in rodent SPF barrier status Periodic health evaluations of larger species (primates, rabbits, birds)Examination and health evaluation of newly arrived large animal species (primates, rabbits, birds)Working closely with primate investigators consulting on veterinary care, pre- and post-operative care and treatments, management of long-term experimental preparations (e.g. implants).Weekend and holiday on-call (shared with the other veterinarians).

Requirements
Qualifications
This is a faculty position. Candidates must have a DVM/VMD degree and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States (New York State – desirable). Candidates should be either currently Board Certified in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or board eligible with intent to become certified (having completed the training requirements for ACLAM board eligibility). Preference will be given to candidates with several years of experience as Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarians in an academic health / biomedical research environment and those with academic research experience (e.g. MS or PHD degrees). The ideal candidate must have excellent interpersonal communication skills, good time management and organizational skills, and have a strong appreciation of the complex issues involved in animal research.
