Department Overview
The Department of Comparative Medicine provides housing, professional and technical services for laboratory animal care, veterinary medical care, animal research project support, and genetically engineered model development and preservation for the OHSU research community and research animals housed throughout the OHSU Central and Waterfront campus. The Clinical Veterinarian provides clinical and preventative care for all animals on the Central and Waterfront Campuses with particular emphasis on non-USDA covered animals. The position also provides training and education to research staff on the humane handling, care and research bio-methodology for all research animals and participates in the Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency Training program. The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service. This position works within a team of veterinarians and veterinary health technicians within the greater department. The individual must exemplify the following personal attributes, as they serve in an oversight capacity within the department:

- Ensure the provision of veterinary care to all colony animals, with an emphasis on non-USDA covered species. Perform veterinary exams, health evaluations, clinical care, and research support. Case management includes coordination and communication with research and DCM staff.
- Assist investigators with animal study model and experimental design development and regulatory and protocol compliance in the care and use of research animals. Provide veterinary expertise on IACUC protocol development, pre-study planning, compliance with federal regulatory requirements, OHSU and IACUC policies, and DCM processes, guidelines and procedures.
- Provide and support ongoing educational and training opportunities for colleagues, technical staff, the research community, and veterinary residents, including active participation in the OSLAMRC training program.
- Assist in indirect supervision of veterinary technicians and veterinary residents through clinical case management.
- Participate in SOP, guideline, and policy development.
- Participate in a veterinary on-call rotation to cover after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Other duties as assigned to support the needs of DCM, including administrative or leadership support tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications
- D.V.M./V.M.D. degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited veterinary school
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States
- ACLAM Board eligible
- At least three years of clinical veterinary experience caring for laboratory animals.
- Familiarity with IACUC functions, federal regulations, and AAALACi standards
Preferred Qualifications
- ACLAM Board Certification
- Oregon Veterinary Licensure
- USDA Category II accreditation
- Experience in anesthesia practices and surgery.
- Experience in the care of a diversity of laboratory species.
