Description
DescriptionThe targeted salary range for this position is $36,422 - $45,527 annually. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Program Integration: Coordinating two historically separate program areas into a unified, interdisciplinary framework that supports both student development and environmental responsibility
- Resource Coordination: Managing shared staff, facilities, and budgets between Touch of Nature, the Recreation Center, and the Sustainability Office
- Green Fund Administration: Serving as the primary point of contact for the Green Fund program
- Student and Campus Engagement: Encouraging widespread and consistent participation in sustainability and outdoor initiatives
- Complex Operations: Overseeing large-scale, multi-departmental events and outdoor programs
- Continuous Improvement: Evaluating programs using measurable outcomes and adapting to evolving student needs, sustainability standards, and institutional priorities.
Examples of Duties
-Direct, plan, and oversee all campus outdoor and sustainability programs coordinated through Touch of Nature, including Basecamp, Dawg Days, Saluki Family Weekend, Earth Month events, and other programs
- Integrate sustainability practices—such as waste reduction, recycling, zero-waste events, and Leave No Trace principles—into outdoor and campus programs.
- Ensure programs are delivered safely, inclusively, and with high quality in accordance with university policies and outdoor industry standards.
- Collaborate with Touch of Nature and campus partners
- Supervise Program Assistants responsible for Basecamp, Sustainability, and campus event operations.
- Recruit, train, and evaluate graduate assistants, student employees, and interns; ensure staff receive development opportunities in sustainability leadership, outdoor programming, and risk management.
- Prepare and manage budgets for campus programs, sustainability initiatives, and special events under the supervision of the Associate Director of Programs.
- Monitor program revenues, expenses, and cost recovery
- Oversee inventory and purchasing of program equipment and supplies.
- Serve as the primary liaison for the Green Fund program, coordinating student and faculty grant applications, facilitating communication between applicants and the Sustainability Council, and assisting with documentation, reporting, and compliance under the guidance of the Associate Director and Director.
- Serve as liaison to campus departments, student organizations, and community partners to promote environmental stewardship and outdoor engagement.
- Collaborate with the Sustainability Council, faculty, and community stakeholders on projects and events that support the university's sustainability and outreach goals.
- Lead marketing and outreach efforts for programs in partnership with University Communications and Student Affairs Marketing
- Collect and analyze participation, learning, and sustainability data
- Prepare annual reports, outcome summaries, and program assessments
- Other Duties as Assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Education, Forestry, Sustainability, Environmental Sciences/Resources, or related field.
- A total of t wo (2) years (24 months) of demonstrated experience educating, leading, influencing, and/or managing people and/or programs that require strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Training and/or experience in life sciences, adventure education, campus recreation, and/or sustainability practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Sustainability certifications, rock climbing certifications, high ropes course certifications, Leave No Trace certifications, wilderness medicine certifications

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
