Senior Clinical Director, Massachusetts General Hospital Emergency Department
The Senior Clinical Director (SCD) for the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Emergency Department (ED) is responsible for overseeing all clinical operations within the ED. This role encompasses leadership in clinical service delivery, operational efficiency, and collaboration with other hospital services. The SCD will work closely with the Academic Medical Center Emergency Medicine Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs (AMC VCCA) and the full MGH ED leadership team to set strategic priorities that serve to enhance the quality of care for patients and promote a positive work environment for all staff. The SCD reports to the AMC VCCA. Direct reports include the MGH ED Clinical Director and Associate Clinical Director, as well as the MGH Director of ED Observation. The SCD will partner closely with the Senior Nursing Director, the Senior Administrative Director, and the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Chiefs for the MGH ED. The MGH ED SCD will also require a close working relationship with the ED SCD for Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), as the Mass General Brigham Department of Emergency Medicine continues to integrate its two flagship academic sites.

Responsibilities:
Clinical Strategy:

The SCD will create and execute a strategy for ongoing clinical operational improvements, including staffing and resource needs.
Representation:
The SCD will serve as a primary liaison from the ED to other services across the hospital and participate in hospital-wide clinical working groups, committees, and inter-departmental initiatives that impact clinical flow and ED patient care. The SCD will work closely with the VCCA to ensure appropriate representation of EM in hospital level operations work at MGH.
Leadership Oversight:
The SCD will oversee the MGH ED clinical operations team, providing guidance and support while promoting professional development for all team members.
Quality Improvement and Safety Initiatives:
The SCD will partner with Quality and Safety leadership to implement and support initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and care quality within the ED.
Collaboration Across Role Groups:
The SCD will work closely with nursing, APPs, and administrative staff to foster a collaborative environment that supports staff engagement and patient care excellence.
Teaching and Academic Contribution:
The SCD will actively participate in the teaching of residents and contribute to the academic mission of the department through scholarly activities.
Salary, Administrative, and Clinical Responsibilities:
The SCD will work 0.65 clinical FTE, which translates to 780 clinical hours per year. 0.5 clinical FTE will be at MGH given their primary administrative role at MGH, with 0.15 at BWH to ensure an understanding of clinical operations at the other primary MGB academic site. The salary for the SCD position will be determined based on current grading for senior director roles, including appropriate clinical buy-down time to facilitate administrative responsibilities. The SCD will be an integral member of the MGH Emergency Department leadership team and represent the department across the institution as necessary.
