The St. Olaf Rural Health Clinical Internship is designed for pre-health undergraduate students seeking exposure beyond traditional academic or classroom experiences. Interns will participate in a split-day immersion model, combining provider shadowing and clinical operations.
The St. Olaf Rural Health Internship Program is full-time, 40 hours per week for 10 weeks starting June 2, 2026.
This position is in Metairie, LA (suburb of New Orleans) and the intern will be traveling to bi-weekly clinical rotations in the area. Housing stipend and daily commute reimbursement will be provided.
The St. Olaf Rural Health Clinical Summer Internship Program is designed to provide pre-health undergraduate students with hands-on experience across diverse areas of the healthcare field. Interns gain exposure to patient care needs throughout the healthcare continuum, along with professional enrichment opportunities such as the A Day in the Life series, Enterprise Foundations programming, networking experiences, and meaningful connections within a student cohort.
Primary Responsibilities
As a Rural Health Clinical Intern, you will gain firsthand insight into rural healthcare delivery across diverse Louisiana communities. The internship deepens your understanding of clinical workflows, population health needs, and patient support models, while strengthening exposure to underserved and resource-limited settings, informing future academic training and career decisions. Under the guidance of physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical operations leaders, you will learn how to:
- Engage with patients during clinical care visits
- Observe clinical decision-making, patient communication, and population-specific care needs
- Gain exposure to healthcare delivery in rural, semi-rural, and inner-city clinic settings
- Support non-clinical administrative workflows essential to care coordination, including prior authorizations, referrals, documentation, and clinic operations
- Learn how care teams coordinate clinical services, community resources, and patient follow-up
- Develop an understanding of how clinical and administrative teams collaborate to improve patient access and health outcomes
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and compliance with all clinic policies at all times

Required Qualifications
- Must be actively enrolled at St. Olaf College pursuing a bachelor's degree within the Pre-Health Studies track- internships are not intended for graduating seniors
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Experience with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license and be able to travel to assigned clinical rotation sites
- Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the duration of the summer internship program (from June 2 - August 7)
- Legally authorized to work in the US without any restrictions. Proof will be required.
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs, TNs, etc. will not be considered)
Preferred Qualifications
- 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
- 1+ years of Clinical Experience
- Knowledge of clinical terminology
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $16.00 to $21.00 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
