Company Profile

Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC)

Company Overview

SEARHC is a non-profit health Consortium serving the health interests of the residents of Southeast Alaska.

SEARHC was established in 1975 under the provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act. The intent of this legislation was to have Indian Health Service programs and facilities turned over to tribal management. Our contracting with IHS began in 1976 when we took over management of the Community Health Aides Program. In 1982, we took over operation of the IHS Juneau clinic, now the Ethel Lund Medical Center, and took over operation of Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in 1986. We are one of the oldest and largest Native-run health organizations in the nation. We have two critical access hospitals and operate clinics and facilities in 28 communities in Southeast Alaska.

Company History

In 1975, Congress passed the Indian Self-Determination and
Education Assistance Act.
This gave Alaska Native tribes the option of assuming the operation
of health services in their communities.

In 1976, SEARHC was one of the first organizations to contract with
Indian Health Service, the federal agency responsible for ensuring
that comprehensive public health services are available to American
Indian and Alaska Native people.

In 1982, the contract was expanded to include the operations of the
Indian Health Service Juneau clinic, now the Ethel Lund Medical
Center.

In 1986, SEARHC assumed operation of the hospital in Sitka, now
