Permanent Full-time | 76 hours per fortnight
Remuneration package up to $132,568 p.a. + benefits
Join a specialist multidisciplinary team delivering impactful mental health care to vulnerable young people across North Queensland.
An exciting opportunity is available for an Occupational Therapist to join the North Queensland Adolescent Forensic Mental Health Service (AFMHS). Based in Townsville, this role provides flexible, evidence based clinical services to adolescents with mental health and substance use challenges who are involved in, or at risk of entering, the youth justice system.
Working across a variety of settings, including community outreach, Courts, Watch Houses and Youth Detention Centres, you will support young people with complex and high-risk presentations to improve functional outcomes, participation and overall wellbeing.
About the Role
The Adolescent Forensic Mental Health Service provides specialised assessment, treatment and case management for young people engaged with the justice system across North Queensland.
In this role, you will:
- Deliver comprehensive mental health assessments, intervention and case management for adolescents with complex needs
- Provide clinical services across community, custodial and court settings, including Cleveland Youth Detention Centre
- Contribute to forensic risk assessment processes
- Provide consultation, liaison and education to families, stakeholders and partner agencies
- Support young people to build skills for daily living, engagement and community reintegration
- Manage a varied caseload, working independently in routine clinical activities with support and guidance for more complex decision making
This role offers the opportunity to apply your occupational therapy skills in a specialised area of practice, supporting vulnerable young people to achieve meaningful and sustainable outcomes.
About You
You are an adaptable and motivated Occupational Therapist who is interested in working in mental health and with young people in contact with the justice system.
- Strong clinical assessment and risk management skills
- Ability to support functional outcomes and recovery focused practice
- Well developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- A collaborative approach to multidisciplinary teamwork
- Commitment to culturally safe, recovery oriented and trauma informed practice
- Adaptability, sound clinical judgement and a proactive approach to care

What You’ll Need
- Qualification in Occupational Therapy
- Registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (AHPRA)
Desirable:
- Experience or interest in mental health, youth or forensic settings
- Appointment as, or willingness to work towards, Authorised Mental Health Practitioner status
